Why make a movie only with still photographs?

Obviously, there is no way to send motion picture cameras across our solar system. While 3D CGI can create amazing images, the stunning real photographs from Saturn and other missions speak to us in a way special effects never can. Watch "Why Not 3D?" here for more...

IMAX, with its crystal clear images up to eight stories high, and wrap-around digital surround sound, allows audience to experience the world with a real sense of scale. Few people have seen many of these images. Almost no one has seen them at the right sense of scale and majesty - only an giant screen like IMAX offers us the chance to feel how vast and sublime these worlds really are.

Stephen working in his basementWhy in a basement?
«Outside In» is really being made in a basement studio, not in some Hollywood special effects house. Although it could be made in Hollywood, it would increase the cost by at least 10 times. This would put pressure to change the film to a more commercially appealing piece (Saturn in 3D! With Dinosaurs!). But due to recent advances in computer technology and years of experimentation with creating motion from still photos, «Outside In» is being created in a basement. Of course, you have to be willing to fill your basement or bedroom with a Frankenstein laboratory/junk yard of home-built computers, servers, RAID disk arrays and the like. Even 5 years ago, high-resolution animation like this at home was nearly impossible. But the world is changing.

  About the movie: Why Saturn?

This Cassini photograph was taken with Saturn eclipsing the sun. The bright blue dot just left of Saturn is us, Earth...

Outside In, the movie, it`s a giant screen visual symphony Composed entirely of still photographs using innovative visual techniques to create full motion, «Outside In» is being created on home-built computers by the filmmaker in his basement studio.

The film will feature powerful music by Ferry Corsten, Samuel Barber and the filmmaker and melds non-narrative visual poetry & science documentary into a spiritual experience for audiences. «Outside In» is a film that's both personal and universal, experimental and sincere, non-narrative and documentary.

Using hundreds of thousands of still images manipulated to create full motion, «Outside In» takes the audience from the big bang to our present day. With visual and audio mashups & photo-motion collages, the camera journeys into the zeitgeist of our age of mass media but music carries us to Saturn. There, we soar around, into and through the incredible photographs of Saturn taken by Cassini using an «2.75D» photographic fly-through technique created using Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

The film will be presented in IMAX quality 4K resolution on massive screens and concert-level surround systems with a synchronized light show to audiences in planetariums, museums, galleries and limited IMAX release.

IMAX is a registered trademark of IMAX Corporation.
